Pro letošek už jsme uzavřeli lyžařskou sezónu a s přicházejícím jarem nastala opět sezóna výletů jinam, než jen do zasněžených Alp 🙂 Včera jsme vyrazili do města Murten, které leží asi třicet kilometrů na západ od Bernu a je jedním z nejlépe dochovaných středověkých měst ve Švýcarsku.

Murten leží na břehu Murtenského jezera, které je v těchto místech považováno za nejteplejší ve Švýcarsku a které je kanály propojeno s Neuchatelským a Bielským jezerem. Dohromady tak tvoří Pays de Trois Lacs (Kraj tří jezer). *)

Trocha historie Murtenu

První zmínka o Murtenu je už z roku 515 – jednalo se o existenci obranného místa zvaného „Muratum“. Samotné město založil vévoda Berchtold IV. ze Zähringenu v letech 1159-1179 jako západní opevnění. Murten byl pak německým císařem Fridrichem II. uznán za „svobodné říšské město“. V roce 1476 burgundský vévoda Karel Smělý obléhá město, ale je poražen švýcarskou armádou – od té doby se oslavuje 22. červen jako výročí bitvy u Murtenu. V roce 1798 město obsazují Francouzi a v roce 1803 Napoleon předává město Murten, které posledních 300 let bylo pod vládou Bernu i Fribourgu, kantonu Fribourg.*

Ačkoliv má Murten jen něco nad 6 tisíc obyvatel, přesto se může honosit statutem města, ač normálně je za město považováno místo, kde žije více než 10 tisíc obyvatel. Zachovaly se zde četné historické památky včetně hradu, opevnění a typická podloubí, která najdete i v Bernu. Většina z 6 000 obyvatel hovoří německy (73 %), menšina (14 %) považuje za svůj mateřský jazyk francouzštinu.

Historické jádro

Prohlídku města jsme zahájili u městké brány Berntor, jejíž věž nápadně připomíná Zytglogge v Bernu (po levé straně před Berntor velké parkoviště, parkovat se dá také podél ulice Längmatt).

Historické jádro Murtenu tvoří tři dlážděné ulice lemované podloubími (Rathausgasse, Hauptgasse a Deutsche Kirchgasse), ve kterých se nachází zejména restaurace a různé obchůdky. Bohužel příjemnou procházku trošku ruší automobilový provoz, který jindy bývá v historických centrech měst spíš výjimečný.

Hrad

Vnitřní prostory hradu jsou veřejnosti nepřístupné, nicméně přístupné je alespoň hradní nádvoří, z jehož terasy máte krásný výhled na Murtenské jezero, na Mont Vully a na pohoří Jura.

Městské opevnění

Vrcholem návštěvy historické části města je volně přístupné opevnění z 15. století s krásným výhledem na střehy staré město a dál. Hradby byly budovány v několika fázích a z různých materiálů, například ze štěrku, tufu (což je sopečná hornina) a pískovce. Spodních 15 vrstev kamene pochází z doby před výstavbou města (12. století).*

Schwimm- und Strandbad

Koupání v bazénu i v jezeře, to je Schwimm- und Strandbad Murten, nedaleko od centra města. Přímo u koupaliště je bezplatné parkoviště, v areálu najdete samoobslužnou restauraci (mají tady dokonce i pizzu!) i bufet. Děti jistě potěší skluzavka a také hřiště na pláži u jezera.

Murten Lichtfestival

Na začátku roku 2020 měl Murten za sebou už pátý ročník festivalu světel, který překonal rekord předchozích let s více než 90 000 návštěvníky. Věřím, že po covidové pauze se v druhé polovině ledna 2022 bude konat i další ročník, protože návštěva určitě stojí za to, i když jdou touto dobou teploty do mínusu 🙂

We’ve already closed the ski season for this year and with the coming of spring, it’s once again the season for trips to places other than the snowy Alps 🙂 Yesterday we went to Murten, which lies about thirty kilometres west of Bern and is one of the best preserved medieval towns in Switzerland.

Murten is situated on the shores of Lake Murten, which is considered the warmest lake in Switzerland in these parts and is connected by canals to Lake Neuchatel and Lake Biel. Together they form the Pays de Trois Lacs (Region of the Three Lakes). *

History of Murten

The first mention of Murten dates back to 515 – it was about the existence of a defensive place called „Muratum“. The town itself was founded by Duke Berchtold IV of Zähringen in 1159-1179 as a western fortification. Murten was then recognised as a „free imperial town“ by the German Emperor Frederick II. In 1476, the Burgundian Duke Charles the Bold besieged the town but was defeated by the Swiss army – since then, 22 June has been celebrated as the anniversary of the Battle of Murten. In 1798 the town is occupied by the French and in 1803 Napoleon hands over the town of Murten, which for the last 300 years has been under the rule of both Bern and Fribourg, the canton of Fribourg.*

Although Murten has just over 6,000 inhabitants, it can still boast the status of a town, although normally a place with more than 10,000 inhabitants is considered a town. Numerous historical monuments have been preserved here, including a castle, fortifications, and the typical arcades that can also be found in Bern. The majority of the 6,000 inhabitants speak German (73%), while a minority (14%) consider French to be their mother tongue.

Old Town of Murten

We started our town tour at the Berntor town gate, whose tower is strikingly reminiscent of the Zytglogge in Bern (there is a large parking lot on the left side in front of the Berntor, parking is also available along Längmatt Street).

The historic centre of Murten is made up of three cobbled streets lined with arcades (Rathausgasse, Hauptgasse and Deutsche Kirchgasse), which mainly house restaurants and various shops. Unfortunately, the pleasant stroll is somewhat interrupted by car traffic, which is otherwise rather exceptional in historic city centres.

The interior of the castle is not open to the public, but at least the castle courtyard is accessible, from whose terrace you have a beautiful view of Lake Murten, Mont Vully, and the Jura Mountains.

Town walls

The highlight of the visit to the historic part of the city is the freely accessible 15th-century fortifications with a beautiful view of the rooftops of the old town and beyond. The ramparts were built in several phases and from a variety of materials such as gravel, tuff (which is a volcanic rock), and sandstone. The lower 15 layers of stone date from before the town’s construction (12th century).*

Swimming pool and lido

Swimming in the pool and the lake, this is the Schwimm- und Strandbad Murten, not far from the town centre. There is free parking right next to the swimming pool, a self-service restaurant (they even have pizza!) and a buffet on site. Children will love the waterslide and the playground on the beach by the lake.

Murten Lichtfestival

At the beginning of 2020, Murten had already had its fifth Festival of Lights, breaking the record of previous years with more than 90,000 visitors. I believe that after a covid break, another edition will be held in the second half of January 2022, because it is definitely worth a visit, even if the temperatures are going to be below zero at this time of the year 🙂

Die Skisaison ist für dieses Jahr bereits beendet und mit dem Einzug des Frühlings ist es wieder die Zeit für Ausflüge in andere Orte als die verschneiten Alpen 🙂 Gestern ging es nach Murten, das etwa dreißig Kilometer westlich von Bern liegt und eine der am besten erhaltenen mittelalterlichen Städte der Schweiz ist.

Murten liegt am Murtensee, der hier als wärmster See der Schweiz gilt und durch Kanäle mit dem Neuenburgersee und dem Bielersee verbunden ist. Zusammen bilden sie das Pays de Trois Lacs (Drei-Seen-Land). *

Geschichte von Murten

Die erste Erwähnung von Murten geht auf das Jahr 515 zurück – es war ein Verteidigungsort namens „Muratum“. Die Stadt selbst wurde 1159-1179 von Herzog Berchtold IV. von Zähringen als Westbefestigung gegründet. Murten wurde dann vom deutschen Kaiser Friedrich II. als „freie Reichsstadt“ anerkannt. 1476 belagerte der Burgunderherzog Karl der Kühne die Stadt, wurde aber vom Schweizer Heer besiegt – seither wird der 22. Juni als Jahrestag der Schlacht von Murten gefeiert. 1798 wird die Stadt von den Franzosen besetzt und 1803 übergibt Napoleon die Stadt Murten, die seit 300 Jahren unter der Herrschaft sowohl des Kantons Bern als auch des Kantons Freiburg steht, an den Kanton Freiburg.

Obwohl Murten nur etwas mehr als 6.000 Einwohner hat, kann es sich mit dem Status einer Stadt rühmen, obwohl normalerweise ein Ort mit mehr als 10.000 Einwohnern als Stadt gilt. Zahlreiche historische Bauwerke sind hier erhalten geblieben, darunter ein Schloss, Befestigungsanlagen und die typischen Lauben, die auch in Bern zu finden sind. Wir begannen unseren Stadtrundgang am Berntor, dessen Turm stark an die Zytglogge in Bern erinnert (auf der linken Seite vor dem Berntor befindet sich ein grosser Parkplatz, Parkmöglichkeiten gibt es auch entlang der Längmatt).

Das historische Zentrum von Murten besteht aus drei von Lauben gesäumten Kopfsteinpflasterstrassen (Rathausgasse, Hauptgasse und Deutsche Kirchgasse), die hauptsächlich Restaurants und verschiedene Geschäfte beherbergen. Leider wird der angenehme Stadtbummel etwas durch den Autoverkehr unterbrochen, der sonst in historischen Stadtkernen eher die Ausnahme ist.

Schloss Murten

Das Innere des Schlosses ist nicht öffentlich zugänglich, aber zumindest der Schlosshof, von dessen Terrasse aus man einen schönen Blick auf den Murtensee, den Mont Vully und den Jura hat, ist zugänglich.

Ringmauer

Der Highlight des Besuchs im historischen Teil der Stadt ist die begehbare Ringmauer aus dem 15. Jahrhundert mit einem schönen Blick über die Altstadtdächer. Die Festungsmauer wurden in mehreren Phasen und aus verschiedenen Materialien wie Kies, Tuffstein (ein vulkanisches Gestein) und Sandstein errichtet. Die unteren 15 Steinschichten stammen aus der Zeit vor dem Bau der Stadt (12. Jahrhundert).*

Schwimm- und Strandbad

Schwimmen im Pool und im See, das ist das Schwimm- und Strandbad Murten, nicht weit vom Stadtzentrum entfernt. Es gibt kostenlose Parkplätze direkt neben dem Schwimmbad, ein Selbstbedienungsrestaurant (es gibt sogar Pizza!) und ein Buffet vor Ort. Kinder werden die Wasserrutsche und den Spielplatz am Seestrand lieben.

Murten Lichtfestival

Anfang 2020 hatte Murten bereits sein fünftes Lichterfest undknackte mit mehr als 90.000 Besuchern den Rekord der Vorjahre. Ich glaube, dass nach einer Covid-Pause eine weitere Ausgabe in der zweiten Januarhälfte 2022 stattfinden wird, denn es ist auf jeden Fall einen Besuch wert, auch wenn die Temperaturen zu dieser Jahreszeit unter Null liegen werden 🙂 .
