The 18 Most Beautiful Mountain Playgrounds in Switzerland

In Switzerland, you’ll find dozens of mountain playgrounds that have kids excitedly running off the cable car while parents enjoy some of the most beautiful views of the Alps. Some offer giant slides, others feature rope courses, wooden climbing structures, or themed attractions. These playgrounds can also be a great incentive for a hike, since you can entice your kids with a wonderful reward at the end. And some trails are set up so that there’s a playground at both the start and the end. I’ve selected 18 mountain playgrounds that I think are worth visiting and can be great destinations for a full-day family outing.

NOTE: Most of the headings are clickable; clicking on them will take you to a detailed description of the playground or the trail where it’s located.

Bernese Oberland

1. Allmendhubel Flower Park

The playground above the car-free village of Mürren is, without exaggeration, one of the most beautiful mountain playgrounds in Switzerland. Here, children can play on giant wooden climbing structures inspired by Alpine nature, crawl through a marmot burrow, or “milk” a cow. Meanwhile, parents can enjoy breathtaking views of the three iconic peaks—the Eiger, the Mönch, and the Jungfrau. The playground is complemented by a short themed Flower Trail that introduces visitors to mountain flora.

2. Männlichen

Männlichen offers another beautiful mountain playground in the Bernese Oberland. Children can have a blast on the large wooden cow named Lieselotte (even in winter!), slides, swings, and other play structures, while parents enjoy breathtaking views of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau peaks. The playground is also the ideal starting point for the Lieselotteweg themed trail, where young hikers will find more fun stations and activities inspired by the beloved cow Lieselotte.

3. Niederhorn

Niederhorn is a great destination for a family outing, offering stunning views of Lake Thun and the surrounding Alpine peaks. Right next to the mountain restaurant, you’ll find a spacious playground with swings, climbing frames, and other play equipment. The biggest attraction, however, is the wooden marble run—for 1 CHF, you can buy a wooden marble and see how it navigates the various obstacles on the different tracks. If you set out on one of the hiking trails, you might even get lucky and spot some of the mountain’s native inhabitants—marmots or ibex.

4. Niesen

Niesen, known as the “Swiss Pyramid,” is a popular destination for families, mainly thanks to its breathtaking views and easy access via the cog railway. Right next to the summit restaurant, you’ll find a playground, which is the perfect place to relax after the cable car ride or before your hike. If you feel like taking a walk, I recommend the easy panoramic trail toward Schwandegg, which offers some of the most beautiful views in the Bernese Oberland.

5. Bidmi Hasliberg

The Bidmi middle station in the Hasliberg area is the perfect spot for families with children, since you can combine your trip here with two popular themed trails. The playground is the natural endpoint of the fairy-tale trail Muggestutzweg, or, conversely, the starting point of Kugelweg, where children guide a wooden ball along a variety of unique tracks. Thanks to this combination, Bidmi is a great choice for a full-day family outing, during which children will enjoy not only the playground but also plenty of fun along the way.

6. Harder Kulm

Harder Kulm is a popular viewpoint above Interlaken, offering iconic views of Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, as well as the peaks of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau. Just a few steps from the restaurant is a small playground where children can play while their parents enjoy the restaurant’s unique atmosphere.

7. Rinderberg

Rinderberg above Zweisimmen is a great starting point for a family hike along the Alpenzauberweg themed trail. Right next to the upper station of the cable car, children are greeted by a mountain playground with play elements built into the exterior wall of the mountain restaurant, where they can let off some steam before the hike begins. The trail itself offers additional fun stations, activities, and stunning views of the surrounding Alpine landscape.

8. Lenk – Betelberg & Lenkerseeli

Lenkerseeli is a great destination for a family outing, where two mountain playgrounds await the kids. The first is located at the upper station of the Leiterli cable car, and the second is by the picturesque Lenkerseeli lake, which is the perfect reward after completing the popular themed trail, the Murmeli Trail (also full of play elements). The miniature train running through the area is sure to be a hit.

Central Switzerland

9. Mooraculum Sörenberg

Mooraculum, the largest amusement park in the heart of a UNESCO biosphere reserve, opened in 2013. The park is divided into several sections, offering fun for visitors of all ages. Perhaps the biggest attraction is the water park on an artificial pond, along with a water-pumping system that uses various sluice gates and other “gadgets.” Like most tourist destinations in Switzerland, this one is tailored to families with children and their comfort. These amenities range from a self-service restaurant, several fire pits, and picnic areas to wooden lounge chairs, hammocks, and hanging swing chairs. While you’re here, don’t forget to take the Grosser Moorrundweg themed trail, which introduces you to the local peat bog and its inhabitants in a fun and interactive way.

10. Globi Alpine Playground – Engelberg Brunni

If you’re taking your kids on an adventurous treasure hunt with Globi and Globine, be sure not to miss the large playground at the Ristis midway station, which features a carousel, a climbing wall, a trampoline, swings, and slides. A short distance away is the Globi Wild Wasserwelt playground, featuring water play areas, a bobsled track, and picnic areas with grills.

11. Fronalpstock

Fronalpstock is best known for one of the most beautiful panoramic ridge hikes in Switzerland, which starts at the summit of Klingenstock. If you set out on this hike with children, a pleasant reward awaits them at the end—a mountain playground near the summit restaurant. While the children play, parents can relax after the hike and once again take in the views of dozens of Alpine peaks and Lake Lucerne lying far below.

12. & 13. Klewenalp & Stockhütte

Klewenalp and Stockhütte offer the perfect combination of an easy panoramic hike and two beautiful mountain playgrounds. The first is located at the top station of the Klewenalp cable car, while the second awaits children at the end of the hike at Goldi-Park on Stockhütte. In addition to climbing frames and other play structures, children will also love the short treetop trail and the barefoot trail, while parents roast sausages at the public fire pit.

Eastern Switzerland

14. Elm

Sportbahnen Elm is a great destination for families with children seeking a blend of mountain scenery and fun. Right next to the cable car’s upper station, a spacious playground awaits children, featuring wooden play structures, trampolines, and other attractions. From there, you can set out on an easy panoramic walk or enjoy other activities, such as riding scooters down into the valley.

15. & 16. Muottas Muragl & Alp Languard

Muottas Muragl and Alp Languard are a great choice for families who want to combine a mountain hike with fun activities for kids. Right next to the upper station of the Muottas Muragl cable car, you’ll find a beautiful playground with views of the Upper Engadine lakes. If you then set out along the panoramic trail toward Alp Languard, another playground awaits the kids at the end—a pleasant reward after the hike.

Valais & Ticino

17. Wollis Adventure Playground Sunnegga (Zermatt)

High above Zermatt, on the “family mountain” Sunnegga, a first-class experience awaits you: Wollis Adventure Playground is located right next to Leisee, a small mountain lake offering magnificent views of the Matterhorn. Our kids spent most of their time on the slide, playing with the water features, and on the lake, where they pulled each other back and forth on a raft. There are wooden lounge chairs, a picnic hut, and plenty of spots for barbecuing. From here, you can then take an easy descent back down to Zermatt.

18. Cardada-Cimetta

Cardada-Cimetta, above Locarno, is one of the most beautiful family outings in Ticino. Right next to the cable car’s upper station is a mountain playground with wooden play structures, making it the perfect spot for a break before or after your outing. Cardada also offers magnificent views of Lake Maggiore and the surrounding Alpine peaks, and there’s even an observation deck from which you can take in both the lowest and highest points in Switzerland at a single glance.
